It works for any shared expense, not just rent
Nothing above is rent-specific. To split expenses based on income, put the amount in place of the rent: groceries, the electricity bill, a holiday, the total of everything you share in a month. Used as a calculator to split expenses with a partner it is the same two numbers, and the same percentages come out.
